Visitors can schedule appointment-based visits by calling the detention department of the jails at (253) 798-7900 to be added to the expected visitors’ logs beforehand. Alternatively, visitors can arrive at the jail 30 minutes before a visitation time to schedule a visit with the scheduling staff.

Visitation rights are granted to parents and legal guardians. Children with adult guardians are also permitted to visit. Before being allowed entry, visitors will be required to present a legitimate photo ID. The following forms of identification are accepted: State identification card, driver’s license, passport, and military identification card. Some of the rules for visitors of the jail include:

  • During their visit, visitors are not permitted to give inmates anything, including food, magazines, books, candy, or letters. Loss of visitation rights and potential punishment will follow the possession of any contraband.
  • When a visitor enters the visitation area, personnel will collect any mobility aids used, such as a walker or cane. After the visitation, these items will be returned.
  • If visitors appear to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol, they will not be allowed to visit.
  • If there are any resident separations, visiting rooms may be allotted; otherwise, room availability is determined on a "first-come, first-served" basis.
  • If custody officials suspect that visitors have weapons or illegal items, they may search them.
  • Visitation will be refused to any visitor who refuses to be searched.

Mailing and Commissary Information

The Pierce County jail allows individuals to send personal and official mail to inmates. All mail sent to inmates must include the sender’s return address on the envelope. To guarantee correct delivery, mailers must also include the inmate’s booking number on all correspondence.

Jail employees will open incoming and outgoing mail to look for contraband and intercept cash, cheques, and money orders. If anything is deemed illegal, the envelope and its contents will either be returned to the sender or subject to a criminal investigation. Depending on legitimate security and order interests, mail is either read, censored, or refused. Legal correspondence between a client and their lawyer, or between a client and the court, that is specifically related to their case, is an exception. Mail to inmates should be addressed as follows:

(Inmate’s full name) (Inmate’s Booking ID #)

910 Tacoma Ave. S.

Tacoma, WA 98402

The commissary section of the Pierce County Jail is responsible for placing orders for a range of goods and arranging their resale to prisoners. As part of the booking process, jail inmates are given commissary accounts from which they can order products such as sweets, snacks, beverages, cosmetics, writing supplies, clothing, and other miscellaneous items, provided they have the money to cover the cost. The number of commissary products that an inmate may order depends on their security classification level. Persons who want to fund inmates’ commissary accounts can do so by calling 1-866-232-1899 or by making online deposits through the third-party vendor provided on the Pierce County Jail commissary webpage.
